4 stars Bringing in a whole new line-up afterwards the uneven (merely embryonic) Dragonfly, and virtually notably young university student Wakeman, but likewise ex-Velvet Opera rhythm section Ford and Hudson, Strawbs took a dramatic plow towards stone merely retained all of their previous folk heritage. With this album, they actually come just virtually equally close as possible to i of the textbook case descriptions of what progressive folk is almost. This album in itself was rather daring as Cousins took the immense take a chance to present the new Strawbs line-upwardly with an most completely new tracks set (except for a few that volition exist released every bit bonus tracks some 35 years afterwards), explaining why the public present (not familiar with the songs and changing musical scope) is only reacting politely to the ring. Do not be fooled, the band's functioning that dark is probably one of their most noteworthy highlight. Dave Cousins's phonation by at present is coming to a (much nicer) Dylan-type of tone, and it is one of the very best feature of the group for albums to come.

This is rather a mixed-up affair and could be called schizophrenics every bit information technology seems the anthology cannot brand upward its mind betwixt shorter tracks (folk-cultured) and more than audacious jam-band-style rock with much longer tracks and the classical oriented Wakeman track chosen Temperament Of The Mind (basically a solo showcase improv for his classical talent) where he became a crowd pleaser. Clearly the rhythm section hints at the second option and it just looks/sounds similar Wakeman (whom had participated to ane or two other tracks in the preceding Dragonfly anthology and specially on the lengthy closing Vision Of The Lady Of The Lake) seems much more than comfortable with them two musicians, than with the two original members, Hooper and leader Cousins. Constantly oscillating between such two different styles does not ruin the continuity of an album. To my tastes information technology is clearly the rock influences that win in this gear up, as is clearly shown in the 9-min+ Where Is This Dream Of Your Youth where Wakeman takes the spotlight and pulls in ane of his best solos of his career (Yes will not requite him that long a spotlight until GFTO) even if information technology is live and improvised. Only before that had happened the very interesting multi-movement 4-part suite Antique Suite, with the only the last part a bit flawed (also long and repeating its "punch line" to frequently. Another sign of Strawbs's multiple influences past now is the sitar present on Fingertip hinting at Indian music. Sad little daughter is nevertheless another charming typical Strawbs number of those days.

Certainly 1 of their classic album and i of those that typifies the boundaries betwixt folk and stone ever on the fringe of both styles, this album is one of their peaks especially in its remastered form wherte the iii bonus tracks are accented vbonus value to the unabridged set. Apart from the epic Vision (from the previous dragonfly album) , there is besides a live song that prefigures their accented best track (with much-inverse lyrics >> here We'll Meet Again) The Hangman And The Papist from the Witchwood anthology. Still equally a bonus is a haunting (studio version in this case) Forever with a superb cello starting out, only the rails is getting a flake drowned out in cord arrangements and if in this case, this track is a flake out of context, it does not hinder the album whatsoever, especially in its remastered and bonused version. Rare are the albums where bonus tracks will make me heighten its overall rating, only in this case the fourth star is now well more than than deserved. .

4 stars Relics?

A superb early on live album from the Strawbs, allowing Rick Wakeman the most breadth to demonstrate his abilities he ever received during his cursory fourth dimension with the band.

"Martin Luther King'south dream" is an excellent opener, faithful to King'southward preachings, while melodic and powerful. "The antiques suite" is four unrelated songs joined together in medley format. The whole is greater than the sum of the parts, and the songs blend neatly together to form a pleasant, if slightly basic piece. "Temperament of heed" sees Wakeman accept heart stage with his piano, for a v minute solo spot, mixing classics and self compositions. For those in the Uk quondam enough to remember, there's an agreeable "Hamlet cigar advert" moment, when Wakeman alludes to having difficulty finding the correct notes.

"Fingertips" finds Dave Cousins exploring what would get over the years his schoolboy like fascination with adult themes. "Where is this dream of your youth" once more allows Wakeman to benefit from a lengthy solo spot, this fourth dimension on organ, at that place's more a hint of what was to come with Aye here.

The bonus tracks on the remastered CD are excellent, peculiarly the live version of "The vision of the lady of the lake", a disturbing tale of a young human and his encounters which first appeared on the "Dragonfly" anthology.

"Antiques and Curious" marked the Strawbs initial steps from folk stone to prog rock, and did so in a very assured and competent way. It does sound somewhat dated now, but is worth seeking out nonetheless. Unlike most live albums, a number of the tracks included here remain otherwise unavailable in a studio recorded format.

3 stars Lovely drove of tunes from The Strawbs on this outing with Mr. Wakeman having a real buzz on the keyboards. They never did much in the live loonshit merely on here some of the tracks are excellent. ' Martin luther Rex's Dream', ' Song of a sad petty girl' and ' Where is the dream of your youth?' all excellent renditions. The Hudson/Ford combination worked well on this album too. The CD package is nicely presented likewise especially if you can get the Japanese version.

4 stars I'm surprised there's only four reviews of this album when you have a very young Rick Wakeman playing keyboards live, and play keyboards he does. If you are a fan of his work, this is a must-have album and for two reasons: "Temperament Of Mind" where he plays some very tasty piano, and "Where Is This Dream Of Your Youth?" where Mr. Wakeman blows upwardly the identify. I'm talking about a 7+ organ solo that will make your jaw drop. It's freakin' awesome! Information technology's him and his Hammond organ going to boondocks, boys and girls. Now, if you're not familiar with The Strawbs, during this flow they were in their deep folky sound, audio-visual guitars, thick bass and pretty songs. But what takes the songs over the acme is Wakeman's keyboards coloring some excellent folk songs, (the song, "Vocal Of A Pitiful Little Daughter" has an opening piano solo that will bring a tear to your center). I'one thousand a fan of their folk songs with Dave Cousins voice and songwriting some of my favorites in rock. He's upward there writing-wise with Ian Anderson, if you lot ask me. So, if y'all're a fan of folk music live with a primary keyboard player, this album is for yous. A loftier quality 4 star matter!

4 stars I've always thought that "...Antiques and Curious" had something special. Later so many listenings I can assure you it is truthful! Ane of the most memorable live functioning in all the music'south history. Not for the complication of music, nor for the aggressive manner of the band, neither for richness of instruments played. Aught at all! The most relevant element here is the pureness of music, the polite recording of a wonderful evening at the Queen Elizabeth Hall. A superb alive functioning of acoustic guitars, piano, organ and harpsichord, few lines of bass guitar spoken, bully and deep emotions from the voices of the leader Dave Cousin, of Tony Hooper, Richard Hudson and John Ford.

A alive performanve I've said. A memorable live performance. The outset memorable alive performance of a certain Rick Wakeman who was at the time the fifth Strawbs' member. His prodigious skills on piano was immidiately cleared as he started to play his classical pastiche "Temperament of Mind". Ii ovations erase from the audience equally they were listening to Vivaldi, Bach, Mozart or Mahler alive! And the audience was right, since that perfoemance brought, immidiately, a great (worth) success for Wakeman.

Do non expect from this tape songs as in Grave New World or Hero and Heroine. This work was realized in the showtime period of the band when they did non still were certain to build up their music in a more stronger and electric shape. That went later. For now, "...Antiques and Curious" still is in the folk genre with a foot already moved to a step forward. The direction was evident: the band was trying to elaborate their own way to such borning star named "art rock".The "Antiquarian Suite" (12,12 minutes long) is the most evident proof.

Past the mode, songs like "Martin Luther King's Dream" or "Song of a Sad Little Girl" (my favourite one of the 2) are two classic of the Strawbs' production even if aren't prog at all! I didn't care too much, and I do non care too much at present, because is the whole opus to have "that sparkling something" that made me think of it as an impressive record. A existent pleasure for me. Not for Strawbs newcomers, though. I reccomend they start with the post-obit "From the Witchwood".

3 stars This anthology with a live presentation past the ring at the Queen Elisabeth Hall had been their third official release introducing their new line-up with exceptional keyboardist Wakeman and new drummer Rick Hudson to the public. Apart from offering their earliest alive performance this record has likewise some historical relevance mark the start of the career of a shining superstar (supernova??, to cite my fellow reviewer, sorry Hugues, but I liked your comment!). I purchased the original vinyl some years agone, actually mainly for the reasons that I plant the "antiquarian" pattern of its cover art very bonny and the band is really an "old love" of mine. I'm sure I used to have the songs recorded on tape in my younger days merely could only think them faintly. So after listening to this album afterwards all those years I couldn't say that I felt disappointed but on the other hand I couldn't claim every bit well that I've been highly fascinated, at to the lowest degree not over its full length. For me the more interesting half of this tape is certainly the second side with highlights as "Fingertips" and "Where Is This Dream Of Your Youth?".

Side ane appears to me a bit subdued meanwhile despite Wakeman'south great solo show in "Temperament of Mind" which certainly had been impressing plenty in those days to become onto the headlines of Melody Maker and finally opening the doorway for his fame every bit a keyboard sorcerer. But imagine: a young unknown musician playing in a lilliputian known folk stone ring reveals such highly skilled talents past presenting improvised classical renditions on pianoforte! This must have been actually a awareness back in 1970 but honestly, without intending to put downwardly his undoubtedly high skills at all, I recall in that location are plenty of (unknown) classical pianists all over the world playing at least equally adept equally him. But anyway this piece is all the same the near interesting part of the first side of this record and moreover Wakeman did a very great job on organ peculiarly in "Where is this dream of your youth?". In this track he did every bit well a brusque citation of Keith Emerson'due south Rondo which is the original version of his solo on "Yessongs" (might exist an interesting fact for all Yep-fans!). So what nigh the residuum of the songs here? "Martin Luther King's Dream" is actually quite a nice more often than not acoustically played 1 though the organ seams to sound rather out of tune here if my perception is correct. "The Antique Suite" is a very lengthy one with 12 min, much too long I would say for what it'southward offering. "Song Of A Lamentable Footling Girl" is equally well "simply" more or less a prissy folk song. I listened besides to a mp3-version of the CD reissue merely I've to say that the bonus tracks added didn't fascinate me that much that I'd like to go this also.

Equally a summary I can say that this tape is a very good live presentation by them and information technology had shown already quite well which management the ring would go after that but on the other paw I wouldn't consider it an essential addition to any collection. For sure a must-have one for fans of this band or admirors of Rick Wakeman, anyhow ***1/2 actually!!

SPECIAL COLLABORATOR Symphonic Team

3 stars Strawbs is one of my all time favourite bands and in their early days they were a band that actually "progressed". From the almost psychedelic, Donovan-like Folk popular of the debut album in 1969 to the almost symphonic Prog Folk masterpiece Hero And Heroine in 1974 was quite a journey. And the audio and approach inverse basically with every anthology during this period.

This live album came out between their second studio album, Dragonfly, and their third one, From The Witchwood. Every bit I said, this was a especially turbulent time for the band. They were all the same very much in search of their identity and constantly developing their sound and writing new material at a high speed. For this alive performance they chose an nearly entirely new set of songs, and until this twenty-four hours most of these songs are not bachelor on whatever studio album. This fact alone makes this anthology worth while. And for anyone interested in early Strawbs and the roots of Prog Folk it is essential listening. Much more and then, I would say, than any of the two first albums. Indeed, Just A Collection Of Antiques And Curios could be said to be the first progressive Strawbs album.

Dragonfly had featured Rick Wakeman for the first time on a Strawbs album. But while Wakeman'southward contribution to that album was very limited and subte, here Rick is allowed much more than space. This makes Just A Collection Of Antiques And Curios an essential album for followers of Wakeman besides. You can clearly hear very strong hints of what was to come later in Wakeman's career in his pianoforte solo Temperament Of Mind. Pianoforte, harpsichord and organ are the instruments played by Rick in this operation. The Moog Synthesiser had not yet entered his repertoire at this point in history.

Still, Just A Collection Of Antiques And Curios is merely that - a collection of old songs with great historical significance and in many means it is indeed something of a marvel. Information technology is conspicuously a transitional album, communicable the ring in the middle of a transitional phase. For difficult core fans of Strawbs and/or Rick Wakeman this is highly recommended. But I would say that it is essential just equally a historical document. For pure listening pleasure I would go for From The Witchwood and all the subsequent albums up till Ghosts before I would start to explore the dim and distant by of Strawbs early days. Just when you do get to that point, Only A Collection Of Antiques And Curios is the correct identify to start.

3 stars The early history of Strawbs boasts many "firsts" : first Uk grouping signed to A&1000 records, kickoff Great britain folk rock anthology (even if information technology wasn't released until several years later), beginning Bluegrass band in U.k., showtime ring for legends Sandy Denny and Rick Wakeman, etc. Add to it i other anomaly: their start album to be released in the US was a live recording, and featured material that was almost entirely hitherto unavailable.

Autonomously from the breakthrough credentials of "Antiques and Curios", the music itself is very much in the pioneering spirit, with its juxtaposition of seemingly incompatible bedfellows similar dulcimer, sitar, organ, and sexually explicit lyrics ("Fingertips"); politically charged anthems ("Martin Luther Male monarch'southward Dream"); a landmark title suite in four pastoral movements, a 6+ infinitesimal centre eastern styled virtuosic organ brandish ("Where is this Dream of Your Youth"); a 5+ minute lesson in classical pianoforte ("Temperament of Mind"), and an immortal song of tenderness ("Distressing Niggling Girl"). Yet this isn't quite cohesive or impressively collated enough to qualify for much more than than the utmost historical significance, which I clinch yous it does. Instead you lot find a few worthwhile blueprints for future directions too equally forays never to be repeated in whatsoever form, about like the group was trying to institute an identity and they had but no idea. To quote a recent lyric from Cousins, "It started out with zero planned".

Likewise included are three bonus tracks, two of which fill out the live performance and therefore present as more than mere afterthoughts. Unfortunately, in the case of "The Vision of the Lady of the Lake", the smoothing out effects of the studio are sorely needed, as Cousins simply does not accept the song range to pull information technology off. Stick with the studio version from "Dragonfly". "Nosotros'll Run into Again Sometime" is one of at present a one-half dozen available versions, which is difficult to remember given that for decades the just available, and still best, rendition was that on Mr Cousins solo endeavour "Two Weeks Terminal Summertime". This ane might merit runner upwardly for its wise deployment of Tony Hooper's voice. The final bonus is the sparkling cello and string laden dear song, "Forever", with immediate affect and a melody you lot will be singing along from the offset. It might be slighly out of place here, having been both temporally and stylistically suited for the "Dragonfly" album. Just so "Antiques" is already a disjointed affair in many ways.

While delivering a trunkload of valuable relics, "Antiques and Curios" chooses to dump them in your living room when what is required is cleanup and a professional's sense of decor. three.5 stars, rounded downwards.

4 stars Review Northward 163

'Merely A Collection Of Antiques And Curious' is the debut live anthology of Strawbs. It was at the aforementioned time their tertiary anthology and was released in 1970 too. It was recorded at the Queen Elisabeth Hall in London. For their do good, this anthology was released outside of the U.k., including the Us, giving them the international exposure they needed. Information technology might seem a bit strange that a live anthology be the first Strawbs' album and the people outside of the UK have heard virtually. It's a very special live album, because although it was recorded live, none of the tracks were released on any studio anthology earlier, except 'Where Is This Dream Of Your Youth', originally released on their eponymous debut studio album 'Strawbs'.

The line up of the grouping had inverse drastically in relation to their two previous studio albums. Only the ii founder members Dave Cousins and Tony Hooper remained, Ron Chesterman and Claire Deniz left the group. The ring had the addition of 2 other new members John Ford and Richard Hudson, and Rick Wakeman as well became a total-time fellow member of the grouping. So, the line up of the album is Dave Cousins (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar and dulcimer), Tony Hooper (vocals, acoustic guitar and tambourine), Rick Wakeman (piano, organ, harpsichord and celeste), John Ford (bass guitar) and Richard Hudson (vocals, congas, percussion and sitar).

'But A Collection Of Antiques And Curious' has half-dozen tracks. All tracks were written past Cousins except 'Temperament Of Mind' which was written by Wakeman. The first track 'Martin Luther Rex'southward Dream' is, equally its name says, a tribute to Martin Luther Male monarch and was obviously written almost his 'I Take A Dream' speech. It'southward the shortest rails on the album, a kind of a folk troubadour epic which benefits from the newly acquired rhythm section and bankroll vocals from John Ford and Richard Hudson and the brief performance from Rick Wakeman on organ. The 2d rail 'The Antique Suite' is a vocal divided into four parts, 'The Reaper', 'We Must Cross The River', 'Antiques And Curious' and 'Hey Information technology'south Been A Long Time'. It was a vocal written about a doctor friend of Dave Cousins and his collection of antiques. It's the lengthiest musical piece on the album and it comes on the same vein of the ii folk epics of their previous studio albums 'The Battle' and 'Vision Of The Lady Of The Lake'. Information technology's an first-class piece of music, ane of their all-time, and an excellent case of what is the early Strawbs' musical compendium. The third rails 'Temperament Of Listen' is a completely different slice of music. This is a Rick Wakeman's classical piano solo piece of music which includes several quotes from several classical musical pieces. This was the piece of music that brought Rick Wakeman to the forefront of the rock scene and shows all the virtuosity, capacity and originality, of his music in the hereafter. The fourth track 'Fingertips' was written about a very cute Swedish girl that Dave Cousins met on those days. Information technology'south a more than experimental song, the but real psychedelic song on the album, and the utilize of a sitar gives to information technology some Oriental musical ambience. It'due south an incredible track where the intimate and almost reticent vocals from Dave Cousins with the intricate instrumental performances, especially the use of sitar and dulcimer, gives to the song the terminal perfect touch. This is a pure genius song, probably my favourite rail on the album. The fifth track 'Song Of A Deplorable Picayune Girl' was written nigh Dave Cousins' little daughter, Joelle. It's a very nice song that shows some intricate acoustic guitar performed by Dave Cousins and also shows a perfect interplay betwixt Rick Wakeman and Dave Cousins, which stands as one of the all-time examples of Rick Wakeman'due south integration with Strawbs. The sixth and last track 'Where Is This Dream Of Your Youth?', was a song released on their debut studio anthology 'Strawbs'. Nonetheless, this live version of the original studio track may practically be considered a totally new vocal. The 3 minutes of the original version go to ix minutes and it has too an extraordinary and killer performance of Rick Wakeman on keyboards. This is a perfect example how a elementary and vulgar folk song can be transformed on a swell folk progressive track. This is undoubtedly a truly bully track.

Conclusion: 'Just A Collection Of Antiques And Curious' is a slap-up album and remains as one of the well-nigh memorable live performances made by the grouping. It isn't for sure their best or even a perfect anthology, but it's for sure their about pure, na've and probably the most cute musical working made by them. 'Simply A Drove Of Antiques And Curious' reminds me one of the earlier albums from Genesis, 'Trespass'. Both albums were released in the same year, both remain the sweetest, delicate, fragile, romantic, innocent, na've and pure albums from them and both represent the turning signal into their musical careers. 'Simply A Collection Of Antiques And Curious' represents a wonderful evening with a superb acoustic concert and where a certain unknown Rick Wakeman fabricated his kickoff memorable performance on a alive ready. This album represents also the turning point on band's music, where the bluegrass, folk and medieval band, moved to a progressive rock band, in my stance, in one of the best British progressive stone groups that ever existed.

Prog is my Ferrari. Jem Godfrey (Frost*)
